You are about to bear witness to the miracle
that is building an It's A Grind Coffee House.
Prepare yourself for some well-supervised craziness!

We decided to reverse the order of this page,
so you will always see the new stuff first!

Now, we warn you...these pictures are far more exciting to us than anyone else -
kind of like old home movies - view at your own risk!

So, if it's not the city, county, inspectors, or plan checkers causing chaos,
you can always count on Mother Nature to stick it to ya!
No rain the ENTIRE month of January...today...torrential showers
on and off (at times, you could not even see across the street!).

February 27, 2003
During a break in the storm, I ran outside to get some shots of our long-awaited signs - THEY ROCK! This is our cool blade sign that hangs right out over the front entrance - very Little Italy (when I get a better photo, I will post it). Gus and the electrician braving the elements (during a drizzle) to discuss the lighting fixtures for the signs.
Our Superintendant reviewing the plans with one of the 19,853 folks that worked on the site today. No joke, we had the plumber, electrician, sound system guys, framer, drywaller, tilers, millwork guys and sign guy all in here milling about at the same time - it was INSANE! The tiler guys arrived and brought in enough supplies to tile Uzbekistan (this is only half their stuff)! Did I mention the rain? We were all shuttling in stuff from the trucks! Is anyone else tired of seeing pictures of this dumb-a** soffit? Cross your fingers, it should be right THIS time!

Floors & Signs...What a great day!

February 26, 2003
We have been waiting with bated breath for our floors to go in...it is a rite of passage - now we can have all our equipment delivered and installed! It was a good thing they started sealing the floor from the back, otherwise, they would not have been able to escape for 2 days!
We love work, we can watch it ALL day! Wait a minute, what exactly do we sell again?! (hard to tell, but sign simply reads "HO")

Whoops!

Moral of the story - measuring is ALWAYS a good idea.

February 21, 2003
So, if you look at preceding pics, you will notice that the soffit over the espresso bar is already painted...or was...we came down for a visit on Friday morning to find them TEARING IT DOWN. It wasn't in the right place, so they had to rip it out and build a new one in the right place!

The Countdown Has Begun

The cabinets are here, the cabinets are here!
(envision Jen running around in circles)

February 17, 2003
Workers, workers, EVERYWHERE! We LOVE seeing this! Some of our pretty cabinets...picture airpots of coffee in this one. The cabinet guys had a fun day of measuring, measuring, and measuring some more.
The biggest of them all - one day, this will be chock full of coffee merchandise - mugs as far as the eye can see! Someday this will have our espresso machine on top...someday REAL soon!

Ceiling Fun

February 11, 2003
So we show up one day and all these odd silver worms had taken over our ceiling. Rumor has it...they serve some purpose. We also found a half man hidden at the blending station.

Weeeee...taping and mudding...fun for all ages!

February 1-6, 2003
The walls are looking more like actual walls! Soon they will be adorned with texture and paint. Yay! The grody (for you kids of the 80s) pipe is all covered up...no one will suspect a thing <evil laugh>.
Why the plywood, you ask? That is where our corrugated metal backsplash will be attached - VERY COOL! This place is a pigsty! Luckily our dumpster arrived just in the nick of time.

Drywalling (hmmm...yep, it's pretty boring)

January 22, 2003
Hmmm...Something is different here...don't tell me. Oh, wait...we have WALLS! Two specimens of a rare breed - San Diego Drywallers. These two were shipped in all the way from Temecula - a rare find indeed (please don't tap on the glass).

We are convinced that putting up this banner would have been easier had we had something better to stand on than a stepstool. Just for the record, Gus has really, really long arms! What a fine sight from across the street. Think anyone will notice?

WE HAVE BUILDING PERMITS!

Alert the media!

January 17, 2003

Eight weeks and thousands of dollars later, the almighty City of San Diego blessed our
humble construction documents! It's a miracle!
We decree this day a holiday throughout the land! <trumpets sounding>

Now, we warn you...these pictures are far more exciting to us than anyone else -
kind of like old home movies - view at your own risk!

December 16, 2002

Marc chillin' in the coffee house - we are going for a very urban/minimalist look. Jen imagining where exactly her murphy bed will fit in all of this. We have this positively hideous roof drain pipe (right) running right down the wall...we wanted to follow the progress of covering up this eye sore!
The view of the front of the store - I know it is hard to imagine, but it is really taking shape! Man! These construction guys sure do leave a bunch of junk lying around...or is this an avant garde art project? You decide.

Coming Soon
The end is near! Equipment delivery is scheduled for the last week of Feb - beans and flavors and mugs, oh my!
